Joseph F. W. Des Barres’ book of ink-and-wash Royal Navy charts includes coasts from Nova Scotia to Jamaica, ephemera and scales at jaunty angles but an unmistakably martial collection: "Harbours fit for the Reception of First-rate Ships of War, are denoted by ROMAN CAPITALS."

Compared to modern charts these show a lot more concern for the terrain, marking peaks, cliffs, plateaus, swamps, vegetation, panoramic illustrations of what you’d see as you approach the shore. Love the little snake of soundings heading up the Hudson River; one navigator’s journey, way ahead of any formal survey?
